After Having 3 Big Babies In The Space Of 5 Years, My Body Had Changed Dramatically. I Had Always Been A Fairly Slim Athletic Build But In Those 5 Years I Had Ranged From A Size 8 To A Size 16 Not To Mention Changing Bra Sizes Multiple Times Due To Breastfeeding On And Off For 8 Years.
My Body Had Been Stretched To Its Maximum Capacity And Even Though I Went Back To A Similar Petite Size, The Skin On My Belly And Thighs Was Permanently Scarred With Stretch Marks And Loose Skin. When I Looked In The Mirror At My Naked Body, I Felt All The Emotions. On The Surface I Was So Incredibly Proud That I Had Been Able To Carry My Babies And Bring Them Life And Nourishment, But Secretly, I Felt Disgusted By The Way That My ‘New’ Body Looked, I Also Felt Grief For The Loss Of My Pre Pregnancy Body.
I Knew That It Wasn’t Realistic To Expect My Body To Go Back To The Way It Was, And There Was No Amount Of Diet Or Exercise That Was Going To Change The Stretch Marks And Loose Skin.
So I Went Into Hiding
I Made Peace With The Fact I Would Never Wear A Bikini In Public, And Purchased One Piece Bathing Suits, I Made Love With My Husband Only With The Lights Off, When Changing In Front Of My Girlfriends I Would Turn And Face The Other Way. To Be Frank I Felt Ashamed Of The Way I Looked, And Angry At Myself For Feeling This Way Considering The Blessings That My Beautiful Children Had Brought Us. Not Everyone Is Lucky Enough To Go Through A Pregnancy Let Alone 3. So This Made Me Feel Guilt. But No Amount Of Counting My Blessings Or Positive Thinking Could Shift My Secret Thoughts About My Body.
